Alongside his work as oenologist at the renowned Herdade do Esporão in Alentejo, Luis Patrão has been working in a very special “side-project”: VADIO is located at the Poutena village in the BAIRRADA region. It’s a small family project (Luis works alongside his father Dinis Patrão who takes care of the Vines) and the project’s focus is recovering BAIRRADA’s traditional grape varieties (Baga, Cercial, Bical) and the production of authentic DOC BAIRRADA wines.
There are two very distinct vineyard blocks and an old warehouse that have been adapted in a very simple manner for the production of wine. The wines present a very classic style that intends to respect the authenticity of the region and the character of its grapes.
Luis Patrão is a member of the Young Winemakers initiative, a group of six young Portuguese Entrepreneurs/winemakers joined together to promote and market their wines across the globe. Yet, the sheer quality and uniqueness of their wines is not the group’s single remarkable feature: There’s a different attitude, and ambition to these boys and girls; “together, up-hill” is their motto, and this transpires into everything they do. Highly collaborative, and open-minded they all share a clear “hands-on” involvement all the way across the full wine making cycle, from vine growing, to marketing and sales. These young winemakers are poised to make a dent in the old wine making world.
