“That Conceito’s Rita Ferreira Marques has the capacity to surprise was a known quality. The twenty-nine year old is the subject of my forthcoming “Unusual Suspects” feature for wine-searcher.com’s new web magazine, which explores her precocious talent. […] Marques herself is under-stated and, hyper-focused on the family vineyards and her wines, I suspect that the outward appearance of the winery as opposed to what’s in it, is of little concern. And when it comes to what’s in the bottle, she certainly delivers.” Sara AhmedThe Wine Detective

Very impressed by these new releases from Rita Ferreira’s Conceito. They’re all really good. The Branco and Bastardo are probably my favourites, though. And the label design is just wonderfully eccentric. Jamie Goode – The Wine Anorak

About Conceito Wines

The Conceito winery is at the Quinta de Veiga (22 hectares) in Vale da Teja, and two further properties totalling 79 hectares of Douro highland vineyards. All red varieties are grown on schist (around 400m), whilst most white is on granite (around 650m). The oldest vines here are about 80 years old, and include 2 hectares of pre-phylloxera vines at around 600m, and 5 hectares of Bastardo at Quinta da Veiga.

The nature of these upland vineyards provide wonderful freshness in the Conceito wines. Rita Marques, when not here at the family property, also makes wine in New Zealand and South Africa. The viticultural regime here is organic, since 2006, but not registered.

Young Portuguese Winemakers

Rita Ferreira Marques  is a member of the Youngwinemakers initiative, a group of six young Portuguese Entrepreneurs/winemakers joined together to promote and market their wines across the globe. Yet, the sheer quality and uniqueness of their wines is not the group’s single remarkable feature: There’s a different attitude, and ambition to these boys and girls; “together, up-hill” is their motto, and this transpires into everything they do. Highly collaborative, and open-minded they all share a clear “hands-on” involvement all the way across the full wine making cycle, from vine growing, to marketing and sales. These young winemakers are poised to make a dent in the old wine making world.
